The SpartaDOS X is a DOS for the Atari 8-bit, written in 1988 and published by ICD on a 64k cartridge. The name was inherited from another ICD product, SpartaDOS 3.2. SpartaDOS X is also reasonably backwards-compatible with the 3.2. It wasn't a very good move to name the new DOS like that, because some people think even now, that it is enough to put the 3.2 along with few utilities into a cartridge to get all the SpartaDOS X functionality. There's hardly anything more wrong: the SpartaDOS X, apart from the fact of residing on such a particular medium, is the most advanced DOS for the 8-bit Atari - or even it can be said, that it is the only true DOS existing for this platform. And, last but not least, it is not derived from 3.2 - the X has been written completely anew. You can learn more about SpartaDOS X from Atariki - if you happen to know Polish language. Or, if not, you can take a look at the Wikipedia article. SpartaDOS X 4.4xThe most popular version, 4.20, was out in 1988; the next one - 4.22 - soon afterwards. Then after so many years of silence new, modernized versions appear again. Go to the project page: |
